Diani Beach-The Mysterious Beach of kenya

“I thought of you and how you love this beauty,
And walking up the long beach all alone
I heard the waves breaking in measured thunder
As you and I once heard their monotone.

Around me were the echoing dunes, beyond me
the cold and sparkling silver of the sea —
We two will pass through death and ages lengthen
before you hear that sound again with me.”
― Sara Teasdale

Poetry has never seized to amaze me, just how simple words can trigger such deep feelings. They play with you and pull at your heartstrings. I’ve always loved the sonnets and the beautiful tales hidden behind simple words. Sara Teasdale just described love and used the beach as a reference. The beach is always in my eyes a place where the sea waves gently touch the sand and hypnotize you with their mellow rhythm. It’s the best place to relax and meditate. A place encompassed in serenity and peace.

While I was travelling through Kenya I stumbled upon an amazing beach called Diani Beach.  It is a popular beach  on the Indian Ocean coast of eastern Africa. It resides about thirty kilometers to the south of Mombasa, in the nearby Kwale County.

The beach expands almost 6 miles in length; the Kongo River is at its north while the Galu beach is present at its south. The beach is actually adjacent to the town of Ukunda. A minor airstrip is present between the Mombasa Lunga road and the beach.

The water near the shore is quite and shallow. There are various sandbars near the surface of the ocean which allow wading with a vivid view of the sandy bottom. The beach is also rather rich in vegetation and includes numerous palm trees which cover the entire coastal areas. The Mwachema River flows into the sea via the Diani Beach.

Diana beach is actually a tourist hub and has a billion places to go and visit. Forty Thieves Beach Bar is one of them. Kick back with a martini while the waves gently brush against your feet. At Forty Thieves Bar and Bistro you can play bar games, listen to live music, enjoy a delicious lunch, and watch water sports or just party till dawn. A warm welcome is assured there and there is a disco under the night sky every evening. The place is about an hour’s drive from Mombasa International airport and a 10 minutes’ drive from the Diani Beach airstrip.

Another place to relax is the Leisure Lodge Golf Club which offers a very unique experience at Diani Beach. The 18-hole course is an appealing challenge for players of all levels. The beautiful course was designed by Tommy Fjastad. It is oozing with a natural environment which includes mango trees, casaurinas, cashew nut and Palm trees. In between the teeing off, take some time to enjoy the resident birds and wildlife. The Leisure Lodge Golf Club is actually home to the annual Diani Masters.

Skydive Diani is a permanent skydiving club on the beach that offers tandem courses and skydives. Tourists and locals alike come back every weekend to be a part of the vibrant folks who spend their leisure time jumping out of airplanes. Most of the jumps land on the Diani Beach but many jumps take place throughout the country. Skydive Diana is an organization that aims to promote skydiving in the country and offer people the experience of a life time as they enjoy breath taking sights of Kenya’s coastline.

For art lovers, artists and patrons alike, Diani Beach Art Gallery is a must see. It provides a refreshing take on contemporary fine African art. The relaxed atmosphere and the airy space lend itself to great viewing and discovering more about African artists. The variety of selections of sculptures, painted works and photography hails are the works of very well-known and popular artists as well as up and coming creative people from not only Kenya but all over Africa. Do keep a look out for their wine and cheese evenings, art classes, special promotions, programs and other events.

Another safe haven for the tourists visiting Diani Beach is the famous Uzuri Spa and fitness forest that is located in the grounds of the Leopard Beach resort surrounded by 6 acres of indigenous forest. It is a magical sanctuary for those seeking rejuvenation and tranquility of their soul, mind and body. The spa provides its clients with a luxurious combination of European style treatments and original African products.

The wide pallet of treatments for women and men ranges from Theravine anti-ageing facials, body wraps, TheraNaka massage to the usual waxing, pedicures and manicures. Uzuri has 5 treatment rooms which compromise of two double rooms for couples as well. All the treatment rooms consist of an outside courtyard for al-fresco massage plus showers that complete the hydro baths. Other facilities offered to the guests include Afya Gym, a fully equipped fitness and health gym, a sauna, a large outdoor Jacuzzi and steam bath. A health bar is present beside the pool that offers numerous versions of fruit juices, a selection of healthy salads, smoothies and light meals.

If you are thinking that this place couldn’t get any better, well it just did because the spa now offers an aerobics and yoga pavilion. Soothing sounds, tranquil ambience, intoxicating aromas, gracious staff, pampered indulgences and serenity classifies the Uzuri experience.

Other Places I suggest are Bidi Badu club at Diani beach and Tandoori .

All in all Diani beach is a heavenly palm fringed white sand beach that stretches for about 20 km. It is kept free of seaweed by the offshore coral reef. The beach makes you wana jump out of bed and hang out on the beach, drink, eat and have an amazing time while H20 Extreme teach you how to kite surf in the idealistic conditions.

Grab your sunscreens and you bathing suits and head out. Diani Beach is a place that you should definitely put on your bucket list. Well that’s all for now and if you like this post please share it and keep coming back for more. Hope to catch you later. Bye!
